Use of the directional atherectomy for the treatment of femoro-popliteal lesions in patients with critical lower limb ischemia
2016
Femoro-popliteal PTA for the treatment of critical limb ischemia is frequently associated with unsatisfactory procedural success rates while directional atherectomy (DCA) has improved success rate since claudicant patients undergoing percutaneous treatment of femoro-popliteal obstructive disease. The aim of this prospective study is to evaluate the safety, efficacy and procedural success of DCA, at one year, in the percutaneous treatment of femoro-popliteal obstructive disease in patients with critical limb ischemia.Methods. From March 2012 to March 2013 18 consecutive patients with critical limb ischemia were treated with DCA (Turbohawk/ Covidien-ev3 Endovascular Inc., North Plymouth, Minn…
Aneurysms of Vertebro-basilar Junction: a single center experience and meta-analysis of endovascular treatments
2014
Vascular lesions of the vertebrobasilar junction (VBJ) are a challenging task in neurosurgical practice, and their gold-standard therapy is still under debate. The authors describe the operative strategies currently in use for the management of those complex vascular lesions and discuss their rationale throughout a literature metaanalysis and a single center blinded retrospective study. The single center study included a review of initial presentation, angiographic features and clinical outcome (with modified Rankin Scale [mRS] scores) over a long-term follow-up. In our series, small aneurysms were effectively treated with endosaccular coils embolization; whereas a strategy including flow-d…
Treatment of de novo femoro-popliteal lesions with a new Drug Coated Balloon: early experience of a single Center in the first 50 patients
2018
Angioplasty with drug-coated balloon (DCB) is an emerging and reliable method for the treatment of femoro-popliteal lesions. We report our experience with the Stellarex™ DCB in the first 50 patients. Methods - From July 2015 to November 2017, 50 patients (41 M, 9F), medium age (64 ± 7.4 year) were subject to 33 angioplasties (PTAs) for femoro-popliteal lesions with a paclitaxel-coated balloon (Stellarex™). Based upon clinical data sixteen patients had severe claudication (56% - Rutherford class 3); ten patients suffered from ischemic rest pain (34% - Rutherford class 4); and five presented minor tissue loss (10% - Rutherford class 5). 42% of patients showed femoro-popliteal lesion TASC-II B…

Endovascular treatment of CCSVI in patients with multiple sclerosis: clinical outcome of 462 cases
2013
Although it is still debated whether chronic cerebro-spinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) plays a role in multiple sclerosis (MS) development, many patients underwent endovascular treatment (ET) of CCSVI. The objective of the study is to evaluate the outcome and safety of ET in Italian MS patients. Italian MS centers that are part of the Italian MS Study Group were all invited to participate to this retrospective study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect detailed clinical data before and after the ET. Data from 462 patients were collected in 33 centers. ET consisted of balloon dilatation (93 % of cases) or stent application. The mean follow-up duration after ET was 31 weeks. Mean…
Image-Guided Mini-Invasive Treatments for Vascular and Oncologic Diseases: Embolization Therapy
2020
Transcatheter Embolization, also called Embolotherapy, is a mini-invasive, non-surgical therapeutic solution used in Interventional Radiology to close blood vessels deliberately. A wide range of embolic agents is available in clinical practice, including metal coils and liquid agents. More recent advances in biomaterials such as shape-memory foam and in-situ gelling solutions have led to the development of new pre-clinical embolic agents. This review offers a brief overview of current and emerging technologies in the field of endovascular embolization. The focus is on devices, materials and techniques.
